studio.oneteneleven http://studio.oneteneleven.com Generated rss-feed from studio.oneteneleven (studio.oneteneleven.com/) 1967 - Swiss Poster Theme http://studio.oneteneleven.com/40 <img src="user/uploads/1967-swiss-poster-theme-/Firefox-1024px-1967.jpg" /> I was invited by Nitzan at editbyedit.co.uk to submit a Wordpress Theme to the Vertical Rhythm project.

A project to link the aesthetic and discipline of modernist poster designs to the world of digital and dynamic grids, manifested by a series of Wordpress themes, adapted from typographical posters.

My theme “1967″ is based on the Swiss Modernist poster “Juni Festwochen Zurich – 1967″ by Josef Müller–Brockmann.

Müller–Brockmann’s work has always been an inspiration, so when invited to produce a theme based on a 60′s Swiss poster Müller–Brockmann immediately sprang to mind.

The aim of the theme was to replicate the vintage print feel of the poster using HTML & CSS aiming to emphasis the gap between print and screen.

The biggest challenge was to reproduce the blue diagonal line, and retain the print overlay feel. This was achieved using the Absolute positioning and z-index CSS property. In keeping with the minimal theme the template is designed to dynamically display the latest 3 posts from wordpress.

Preview and download the theme:

Lone - Pineapple Crush / Angel Brain

The main focus of the site is on the artwork and audio. Two tracks of compressed, 4x4 funk driven by crushed, hip-house drums, old school synth swells and Reese-esque bass rumbles.

The audio is presented using a JQuery media player, allowing the audio to play on mobile devices such as iPad and iPhone.

The Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA) is announcing the launch of Font Aid IV, a project uniting the typographic and design communities in raising funds to expedite relief efforts in Haiti. Everyone is encouraged to help the cause by spreading the word to friends and colleagues.

Type designers, graphic designers and other artists from around the world are invited to contribute artwork to be included in a typeface created exclusively for the Font Aid IV effort. The theme of Font Aid IV is 'Coming Together' which we will represented though a font consisting entirely of ampersands. Coming Together will be made available for sale, with all proceeds going to Doctors Without Borders. SOTA, a US-based non-profit, is acting as a non-partisan organizing body to help coordinate the effort and ensure all funds are distributed appropriately.

Bellow is my ampersand icon submission.

Live Music from:

PART CHIMP
Back in Nottingham for the first time in over two years, in support of their new album, 'Thriller'. My Bloody Valentine and Dinosaur Jr play loud but their tunes have never really had the heaviness to match their mammoth volume. Part Chimp, however, match their cacophonous sound levels with the weightiest rock imaginable. Their records are released by Rock Action Records (founded and maintained by Scottish post-rock band Mogwai).

SOUVARIS
Souvaris are a 5 piece rock band from Nottingham, UK, comprising of two guitarists, bass, synths and drums. Now nine years old, the band has spent the best part of a decade building their reputation as one of the UK’s most inventive and versatile acts. This autumn will see a new split release with Bordeaux’s excellent art-rockers Sincabeza on Gringo Records. Having played countless shows with bands ranging from Do Make Say Think to Polar Bear, The Shipping News to Thee More Shallows, Fly Pan Am to old friends Explosions in the Sky, Souvaris deliver a live show that is as entertaining as it is subtle, as direct as it is layered.

BAD GUYS
BAD GUYS played their first gig at ATP curated by The Melvins and Mike Patton. Neither knew BAD GUYS were gonna play but they did it anyway. You ever seen someone crowdsurf in a living room? BAD GUYS have. You ever seen Jared from The Melvins force his way through your window to get to your gig? BAD GUYS have. You ever trashed a place so bad it needs to be rebuilt from scratch? BAD GUYS have.

GUILTY PARENTS
Punk trio knocking out snarling garage punk which'll make your nuts swing taking in influences like Die Kreuzen, Make-Up, The Mummies and the Bad Form.

Memories http://studio.oneteneleven.com/12 <img src="user/uploads/memories/MacBook-Memories.jpg" /> Memories is a collaboration project launched summer 2009 between myself, Stuart Boyd (Subism), Rishi Soda (DAHRA) & Garrick Webster (Freelance Journalist).

Memories will look at the thoughts and experiences of individuals who have survived cancer, as well as those of people who have lost loved ones. There will be ten stories inside, each looking at one person’s recollection of a particular day in the struggle against cancer. For each of these ‘memories’ a dozen leading artists, illustrators and designers will be creating their own visual response. Two further stories will go ‘open brief’ and we’ll be inviting creatives worldwide to make their own images to accompany the text. The best submissions will go into the book.

That makes for 12 touching stories, and 144 smashing pieces of artwork

We expect it will take a year to complete, culminating in the launch of Memories and an exhibition.

Neville Brody//

The design legend was fist on at OFFF 09. He talked about dangerous design, telling us to 'make trouble' and 'take risks'. Neville Showed past work and took us through the redesign of the Times Newspaper. However did reminded me slightly of a history of a design lecture at college.

Karsten Schmidt (TOXI & POSTSPECTACULAR)//

Paula Scher//

Joshua Davis//

Having seen Joshua Davis at MadInSpain last year I knew what to expect from Joshua, however he impressed me with the way his work is progressing in new directions. Joshua rocks a crowd like no one else and certainly got a big reaction to his interaction with the crowd. I was impressed with his collaboration with Float 4 to produce the Interactive Wall at OFFF, combining his abstractions with new technology.

Day 03//

Si Scott Studio//

After spending a bit of time hanging with Si in Lisbon I was looking forward to seeing him speak. Si did Leeds proud and overcame sound problems delivering a fresh and inspirational talk. Si speaks from the heart and showed the audience through his impressive range of work. From college work & winning a D&AD young blood award through to current work for clients such as Madonna and Sellfridges. I think Si shocked the crowd by telling them 90% of his work is done by hand.

Digital Kitchen//

Digital Kitchen delivered a well put together presentation taking us through the creation of their True Blood title sequence. I would have liked to have seen a wider range of projects but their presentation style and slides more than made up for this.

Stefan Sagmeister//

After coming on stage in a rather fetching spotted dress I was unsure what to expect from Stefan Sagmeister. He spoke about a list of things that make him happy and how much that is influenced by design. An impressive volume of conceptual work was shown, from the album covers he is renowned for through to crazy installations. Highlights of work for me were the Being not Truthful installation and the identity for Casa de Musica in Portugal. Stefan had some important messages mainly to be self confident and find happiness in your design process.

Kyle Cooper//

Kyle Cooper & Prologue films gave the final presentation at OFFF 09. Talking us through outstanding title sequences for films such as Ironman, Superman Returns, se7en and many more. Following with the creation of the OFFF main title sequence and the process behind it. A great end to 3 days of inspirational presentation all with some message teaching us to 'Fail Gracfully'

After been approved as an official Noise Five stockist, Attik approached us to provide something a little different for the Noise Five Launch Party.

The concept was to have two artists select a page from NoiseFive then draw their inspiration from the book.

Large boards were painted white and given a special coat of glow in the dark spray paint inspired from a process in the book.

Two of Subism’s artists N4T4 and Phil Blake (Philth) drew inspiration from a double page spread from Noise Five. The artwork evolved over the evening and featured a little surprise as the lights dimmed the glow in the dark spray paint was activated.

Subism Live http://studio.oneteneleven.com/4 No files to displayAs part of the Subism Live team, I regularly photograph the Live events.

Over the past two years Subism has hosted a series of regular ‘live’ events around the UK. Bringing live illustrators, graffiti artists and designers to your city.

Subism has featured artists such as Jon Burgerman, Mr Bowlegs (Jeffrey Bowman), Julie West, Mr Penfold, TwoPence, Waste, Billy, N4T4 & Phill Blake.

Subism Live has been commissioned by design agencies such as Attik for their Noise FIve book launch and Studio Output for Glug networking events.

Subism has also been involved with charity events, community art projects & murals. “We brought Subism on board for the launch of our latest book, NoiseFive. We were really impressed by the unique element they brought to the event, they worked to bring the book to life through live art and innovative use of materials. A great young company with a bright future ahead.”
James Sommerville, Co-Founder and Creative Director @ ATTIK

“You don’t really know what to expect when you ask a bunch of illustrators to paint your walls. Playing safe has never really been the point of our events but the Subism team turned up and just got on with it. As you can see from the pictures everyone brought something different in terms of creative and whilst wildy different in style the work was all absolutely quality.”
Ian Hambleton, Partner / Account Director @ Studio Output London

“Subism have put on a great party at the last two Glug events in Nottingham and London. As well as being pretty damn good at their art, they are also top people. They bring together loads of different styles of graffiti and illustration and will take over any canvas, wall or anything you put in front of them and come up with the goods. Definitely highly recommended!”

BD4D - Wellcome Trust http://studio.oneteneleven.com/14 The Wellcome Trust is an independent research-funding charity, established under the will of Sir Henry Wellcome in 1936. It is funded from a private endowment, which is managed with long-term stability and growth in mind.

ONcovered http://studio.oneteneleven.com/25 <img src="user/uploads/oncovered-/Audiography_Web_01.jpg" /> <img src="user/uploads/oncovered-/Audiography_Web_02.jpg" /> <img src="user/uploads/oncovered-/Audiography_Web_03.jpg" /> Usually graphic designers are almost the last creatives to work on music projects before they go in production; after the music has been rehearsed, played, recorded, mixed, remixed and mastered, the graphic designer adds a visual identity to the music. At its best, the graphic designer is able to capture the essential atmosphere and mood of the recorded music and give it its unique face.

This way of working is fine and logical, given the fact that the music is leading. However, we believe it is an extremely interesting idea to flip this concept 180° ! A fine international selection of graphic designers is challenged to take the leading role in a music project: the designers create a record cover that is free of restrictions and other people's wishes and needs.

After finishing their designs, it is up to the designers who they think should be in the band and what the music should sound like. We would like to take it even one step further and let the style, atmosphere and attitude of the music be dictated by the designers as well. Within this concept ONcovered reveals the sound and power of graphic design. It also means a radical new approach in the process of creating new music.

So you call the shots, you dictate the musical style, the name, the title. It should be for a record that doesn't exist yet, for a band that doesn't exist.

My Entry made it into the final 30 and was exhibited in the Expo in the Netherlands
